Beliefs in Bad LuckMaurice Simone was a steadfast believer in bad luck.Beliefs in Bad Luck
At eight o-clock sharp every day, he went out to get the morning paper, chock-full to the margins with all the newest news. Every day, a fresh set of grievances.
He had no use for the sports section. This, he discarded immediately.
First thing he liked to do was to open it up to the inside front section just to read the obituaries. He counted up the ages one by one to approximate his longevity. When most of the deceased had been older than he was, well then today was going to be a damn good wonderful day. When most of them had died younger than himself, wel

grandma's soupI was nine years old at my grandparents’ house where my parents used to send me nights they felt like getting drunk. Most grandmothers are excellent cooks. Mine, however, was not. The scent wafting up from the soup she had prepared was so foul that I snuck the bowl underneath the table for the dog, a miniature poodle that never stopped begging, even when it was full. The alligator lurched with jaws of death, And tried to sink them into python scales. The snake snapped like a spring to squeeze out breath, All teeth and claws against an endless tail.
The python twisted t

Time, it seemed, had been stuck in his throat, and ever since then, it hadn’t passed, frozen in its place. He choked on it, coughing so heavily that bloodied tears fell from his eyes, but still it wouldn’t move, therefore he also became ice, staying in his place, just as time did.
He had a brother. That other boy, the brother, used to watch time pass on, watching the hands on the clock move slightly. That clicking sound, or was it a tick? The way the ballad, it, fell elegantly from the clock was hypnotizing, sedating, and possessing.
